Life on the Hyphen is based on a series of personal essays about growing up as a child of Korean immigrants in rural Pennsylvania during the 1970s and 80s. A humorous and sometimes heartbreaking exploration of what it means to be Asian and American, the story is told through text, movement, and an attempt at learning to do Jultagi (줄타기), traditional Korean performance of tightrope-walking while storytelling.

Ensemble InterTwining—an interdisciplinary, intergenerational group of artists that specializes in vocal/movement theater—premieres an original mini-opera that traces the psychological continuity of its protagonist through sequences of time and space. With music by Toby and Azalea Twining, movement by Darla Stanley and Mac Twining, libretto by Konstantin Kulakov, the evening includes a special feature by guest artist Chris Burnside.
