Zhang’s new evening-length work, Degrees of Freedom, explores explores the state of “outsiderhood”, referring to the condition of being situationally or voluntarily set outside the structural arrangements of a given choreographic system. The self becomes ambiguous, neither here nor there, betwixt and between all the fixed points of classification; They pass through a symbolic domain that has few or none of the attributes of his past and coming state.
